We would like to send a massive thank you to Roy Mackenzie for raising a fantastic £1,600 in aid of the Talbot Butler EAB. It was all about the numbers and those boots that are made for walking…

Thinking about what he could do to mark his recent 65th birthday, Roy settled on turning the number into a unique challenge.

The aim was to walk 65 miles of the Nene Way from Badby to Wansford, over the course of 6.5 days.  Roy had the company and support of his son Tom for the walk, who also celebrated a birthday while out on this challenge.

Roy’s wife Jan was also crucial in supporting them on their walks as she did the driving to drop them off and pick them up where required.  Not being able to drive as direct as the walkers walked, this involved a fair few more driving miles.

The weather throughout the week kept nice and dry, and there were only a few crisp cold days with Jack Frost putting in an appearance for the start of their 6th day.  The walking was fast-paced on this day to keep warm.

It proved very interesting when completing the Sixfields to Barns Meadow section of the trail as someone had decided to have a bit of fun by turning all the signs around.  Luckily, friend Ben had mapped out the entire walk for Roy and Tom so they were able to keep on track.

Although, a slight neglect of map reading on the final day did mean the walk ended up at 69.4 miles.  Almost 70 miles walked I think it’s time for Roy & Tom to put those feet up and have a well-earned rest!  They did kindly come in to present their incredible donation to Chelsea Jackson and Rebecca Turton in the EAB.

Our thanks to all of you – Roy, Tom, Jan and Ben for completing this challenge and supporting the emergency assessment bay!
